His parents were Ruth Minnie (née Simon), a nurse and healthcare administrator, and Alexander B. Greenspan, an accounting manager. To create his stage name, he took his father’s first name.

He spent his formative years in Maplewood and Livingston, New Jersey, and graduated from Livingston High School in 1977. Though he initially aspired to become a magician, he abandoned the idea after being told at a magic camp that his hands were too small for card tricks.

He became interested in the theatre instead and recognized its potential as a form of illusion and magic. This realization prompted him to pursue a career in theatre.
