Unfortunately, his father passed away in a car accident when Allen was only 11 years old. Two years later, his mother remarried and moved the family to Birmingham, Michigan, where Allen attended Seaholm High School.

At Seaholm High, Allen was involved in theater and music classes, which sparked his passion for classical piano. After graduating, he attended Central Michigan University before transferring to Western Michigan University in 1974.
