Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams on May 6, 1987, is an American rapper hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his music career as a battle rapper and was part of the short-lived rap group, The Bloodhounds.

In 2008, Meek Mill was signed to his first record deal by Atlanta-based rapper T.I. After leaving Grand Hustle Records, he signed with Miami-based rapper Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group (MMG) in February 2011.

Meek Mill’s debut album, Dreams, and Nightmares were released in 2012 under MMG and Warner Bros. Records. The album features the lead single Amen” (featuring Drake) and peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

Early life

Robert Rihmeek Williams, also known as Meek Mill, was born on May 6, 1987, in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother Kathy Williams raised him and his older sister Nasheema Williams on a tight budget after his father was killed during an attempted robbery when Meek was only five years old.

Kathy worked multiple jobs, including cutting hair and shoplifting, to make ends meet. As a child, Meek was introverted and rarely spoke. However, his interest in hip-hop grew after he became acquainted with his father’s brother, Grandmaster Nell, who was a pioneering DJ in the late-1980s Philadelphia hip-hop scene.

Meek was also inspired by independent hip-hop artists Chic Raw and Vodka, who he learned to emulate by watching their DVDs.

During his teenage years, Meek started participating in rap battles under the name Meek Millz. He spent countless hours filling notebooks with verses and later formed a rap group called The Bloodhoundz with three friends.

They burned CDs and distributed them among friends and acquaintances. In 2008, Atlanta-based rapper T.I. signed Meek Mill to his first record deal, and he later joined Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. In 2012, he released his debut album, Dreams, and Nightmares, which peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

After his release, Mill continued to work with Grand Hustle Records, collaborating with DJ Drama on the Flamers 3 mixtape, featuring the promotional single “Rosé Red”.

However, due to legal troubles, Mill was never able to release an official album under Grand Hustle and they parted ways in 2010. In that same year, Mill starred in the direct-to-DVD crime drama film, Streets, produced by Alston and directed by Jamal Hill.
